James and John wanted Jesus to give them whatever they wanted. In the same breath Jesus says, “no,” and tell them true leader are servants of all. How could Jesus tell them to be servants while Jesus’ doesn’t even give them what they want? The answer is that true service and servanthood is not about pleasing people or giving them whatever they ask for. True servanthood is about doing the best thing for someone, even if they don’t see it or appreciate it at the time.
